About the service
What to Expect
An initial appointment will last approximately 1 hour and any subsequent appointments will be 30 minutes. Patients attend, on average, 4 appointments but this does vary in response to individual needs.
At initial appointment the physiotherapist will listen to your current problems and the history behind them. You will also be asked about your general health and any current medications so please bring an up to date list of medications. Most ladies are offered an examination at their first appointment although there are some exceptions such as menstruation and during the early weeks following a vaginal delivery. You will be seen by a female physiotherapist in a private clinical room.
Vaginal/ano-rectal examinations
In order to be able to advise you on the most appropriate course of treatment, your physiotherapist needs to assess the strength and function of your pelvic floor muscles. This is done through an internal examination. We know that 30-50% of patients who carry out pelvic floor exercises do so incorrectly. The examination will enable your physiotherapist to tell if you are doing your exercises properly.
If you do not wish to be examined or if you feel at all anxious please inform your therapist. If you do not want to be examined that is fine, we can still give you treatment, but it may be limited. Women’s health physiotherapy will never be painful.
