Psychiatric Intensive Care ward benefits from refurbishment

Communal area in Hadley Ward

A ward providing specialist care to acutely unwell adults in Worcestershire has reopened following recent renovations.

Hadley Psychiatric Intensive Care Ward, which serves Herefordshire and Worcestershire, and the Section 136 Suite, a facility for people detained by the police under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act, are located within the Elgar Unit in Worcester. They provide specialist mental health care for adults experiencing a period of acute illness or who are at a higher risk of harm to themselves or others.

Both environments were tired from wear and tear over the last 14 years, and in need of a makeover to better support staff and patients’ needs.

As part of the refurbishment, both wards are now lighter, brighter, and more inviting for patients due to new floors, furniture, and more modern features. On Hadley, all bedrooms and ensuites have also been fitted with patient call bells should patients require assistance. Doors have been replaced to include the latest technology, such as anti-barricade features to support patient safety. Additionally, the courtyard has had new benches installed, and a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) room has been created to provide a space for clinicians to be able to meet on site to discuss patient care.

Following the transformation, patients will benefit from more modern communal areas, a sensory and activity room, and dedicated outdoor space to help support them in reaching their recovery goals.

Robert Mackie, Chief Executive said, “The refurbishment of both Hadley and  the 136 suite have been designed to maximise therapeutic outcomes for our patients. These new environments, together with the specialist care provided by our teams, will support our patients in reaching their recovery goals quicker and reduce their length of stay in hospital."

John Devapriam, Medical Director, and Deputy Chief Executive said,  “T he makeover provides significant improvements to our patients experiencing a period of acute illness. The modern, clean, and fresh interiors are really important in supporting recovery".
