MHP receives recognition for delivery of ‘life changing’ treatment

A mental health practitioner from Worcestershire has received the prestigious ‘Barry Reynolds Award’ for her delivery of ‘life changing’ mental health treatment.

Kay Fisher, Lead Practitioner and registered Operating Department Practitioner (RODP) at Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust has been recognised for her outstanding contribution to the delivery of electroconvulsive therapy by colleagues and members of professional forums, including the Royal College of Psychiatrists ECT Accreditation Service and National Association of Lead Nurses in ECT.

Created in memory of Barry Reynolds, a celebrated and highly regarded clinician in the field of ECT, the award recognises the outstanding contribution of practitioners and their commitment to delivering ECT to the highest possible standards of patient experience and safety.

Kay Fisher said: “I am delighted to have received this award for my achievements in ECT.  It was a real surprise, and I am over the moon.

“I have been privileged to work with and learn from many excellent clinicians from across the country and adopt those best practices here in Worcestershire, with the support of my team to provide the best care for our patients.  It is lovely to receive recognition for this.

“I am also really happy that our team has recently been shortlisted for the “Patient Choice Award” in the annual trust awards after receiving several nominations. After all, to my team and I, it is the patients experience that really matters”.

Together with a team of specialist anaesthetists and psychiatrists, Kay provides ECT to patients from across Worcestershire who are experiencing severe mental ill health.

The treatment is most often offered to patients with severe depression, where medication may not have been effective, and where often their illness is having significant adverse impacts on their quality of life.

One nomination from the Patient Choice Award read, “I wouldn’t be where I am today without the care given by the Worcester ECT team, they gave me life changing treatment that was pivotal to my full recovery and my family‘s wellbeing.

“I can’t thank Kay and the team enough”.

In addition to their recent Patient Choice nomination, the service has also been accredited by the Royal College of Psychiatrists Electroconvulsive Therapy Accreditation Service (ECTAS) for their commitment to meeting and exceeding best practice for the delivery of ECT.
