Mental health pharmacist awarded prestigious title
Juliet Shepherd, Lead Pharmacist for Mental Health at Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust has been awarded the prestigious title of Fellow of the College of Mental Health Pharmacy (CMHP) in recognition of her outstanding and sustained contributions to the field of mental health pharmacy.
The CMHP, a charitable organisation dedicated to advancing education and research in mental health pharmacy, grants this accolade to individuals who have made a significant and lasting impact on the role of pharmacy in mental health.
Locally, Juliet’s role as Lead Pharmacist for Mental Health involves providing advice and expertise to patients and staff on complex mental health medication issues, chairing the Medicines Management and Safety Sub Committee to ensure that medicines governance is a top priority in the Trust.
Juliet works strategically across healthcare organisation boundaries to improve the use of medication for mental health across the whole of Herefordshire and Worcestershire.
Her achievement recognises her exceptional dedication to improving mental health care through a variety of high-impact projects. Notably, she played a key role in establishing the CMHP’s accreditation processes, introducing quality assurance standards to ensure mental health resources meet the charity's benchmarks for excellence. This accreditation process is designed to promote best practice in mental health care and improve patient outcomes.
Juliet also played an instrumental role in the development of The Stolen Years report, which highlights the disproportionately high rates of smoking among people with a mental health condition. Published in 2016, this report paved the way for a partnership addressing smoking in mental health that remains in place today.
"I am deeply honoured and proud to receive this Fellowship,” explains Juliet. “I remain a credentialed member of the College and plan to continue to use the encouragement of my colleagues in the College and my expertise to ensure that patients and staff have access to advice from medication experts like me”.
The Fellowship of the College of Mental Health Pharmacy is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, commitment, and expertise in mental health pharmacy.
The CMHP described Juliet as “embodying everything we hope for in a specialist mental health pharmacist” and noted that her appointment as Fellow was an obvious and well-deserved recognition of her tireless work in the field.
