Events to celebrate Learning Disability Week 2024

Exciting events are taking place across Herefordshire and Worcestershire to mark Learning Disability Week 2024.

The week will be recognised with a series of events across in the two counties, supported by our Learning Disability Teams and other external organisations.

Join us to smash the myths about learning disabilities, and have a week of fun and activity.

Aspire Community Hub in Hereford - Tuesday 18th June, 10am – 3pm

This is a free event with Aspire Living, attended by our Herefordshire Learning D isability T eam. Activities include: a s ession around breaking down barriers, tai chi – two one hour sessions with a qualified instructor, drama Group at 2pm for an hour, arts and crafts, examples of eating safely with swallowing difficulties. Tea, coffee and cake provided throughout the day. There is no need to register, just drop-in.

Perdiswell Leisure Centre in Worcester - Monday 17th June, 10am – 12pm

Our South Learning Disability Team are supporting the Learning Disability Social Care Team at Worcestershire County Council with an event for people with learning disabilities, and their family, friends and carers. You are invited to meet and chat to your social work team, and have fun with your friends. There will be lots of games, music, crafts, and useful information for you. There will also be lots of cake and juice available to people attending. There is no need to register, just drop-in.

In Hereford, Aspire Living are holding a week of events. Please contact Aspire Living for more information.

  • Monday 17 June - Focusing on community safety. About Face are doing a forum theatre on hate crime called - Someone Else's Train. This will be held at our Community Hub.
  • Tuesday 18 June - Please see above for more information. This event will be about health and includes access to a speech and language therapist, physiotherapist and a community nursing team. Taurus Healthcare will also offer healthchecks. This will be held at the Aspire Community Hub.
  • Wednesday 19 June -  Aspire Growing are hosting an open day with scones, cream, and jam available between 10am and 2pm.
  • Thursday 20 June - A taster event will be held at Aspire's Community Hub.
  • Friday 21 June - Aspire Living are partnering with The Courtyard Theatre to have some fun with drama, dancing, and a sensory rave.

Additionally, our Community Learning Disabilities Team in the north of Worcestershire are attending Our Way's advocacy service coffee morning, to meet and mingle with service users there.

Our Learning Disability Speech and Language Therapy Team are also sharing positive communication resources over on their  Facebook page and will be posting photos from the three events as they occur during Learning Disability Week.
